DBT in Schools

CBC trains and consults with school administrators, teachers, and clinical staff to build and strengthen their DBT services for students of all ages.

Our standard school/agency-based program includes:

  • Orientation and commitment workshop with key stakeholders
    • (e.g., Superintendents, PPS directors, building principals, clinical staff, special education department, guidance/counseling staff)

  • Three-to-five-day workshop of DBT foundations and skills training

  • Implementation workshop with direct providers

  • Ongoing bi-weekly consultation with providers for at least two years

Comprehensive School-Based DBT (CSB-DBT)

(CSB-DBT; Miller, Rathus & Linehan, 2007; Rathus & Miller, 2027; Miller & Rathus, 2027)

This program targets youth who exhibit at least some degree of emotional and behavioral dysregulation and uses all of the standard DBT modes of treatment: individual counseling, skills training group, brief skills coaching during the school day, therapist consultation team). CSB-DBT is considered a Tier 2 or Tier 3 intervention.

Universal DBT for Middle School and High School

(DBT Skills in Schools: The Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving for Adolescents; DBT STEPS-A, Mazza, Mazza, Miller, Rathus & Murphy, 2016)

This program prepares educators to teach DBT skills to 6th-12th grade students in a classroom setting. This is considered a Tier 1 intervention to help students learn how to regulate emotions, manage relationships effectively, better focus on their school work, and tolerate distress before crises erupt.

Universal DBT for Elementary School

(DBT Skills in Schools: The Skills Training for Emotional Problem Solving in Grades K-5; DBT STEPS-E, Mazza, Mazza, Rathus & Miller, 2026)

Provides wrap-around Multi-Tiered Systems of support in social and emotional learning by training school staff in both Universal Classroom DBT and Comprehensive School-Based DBT providing Tier 1, Tier 2 and 3 supports.

Universal and Comprehensive DBT Combined

Schools that have opted to conduct both types of DBT, report having several of these goals in mind:

  • Providing a common social-emotional skills-based language for all students, teachers, clinicians, and administrators

  • Providing skills that can be taught early in the child’s life with the hope of preventing some of the challenging problems that arise in later adolescence

  • Providing comprehensive School-Based DBT to students already exhibiting significant emotional and behavioral dysregulation allows the school to manage and maintain these students within the district rather than having to pay for the student to attend out-of-district placements

  • Providing comprehensive DBT in schools often reduces ER, psychiatric, and medical hospitalization visits, while keeping kids in school

  • Providing DBT improves emotional, behavioral, and academic outcomes

  • Providing DBT is an evidence-based intervention that can be used transdiagnostically, hence having greater applicability to a broader number of students

  • Providing DBT can help reduce staff and administrator burnout by providing everyone with the necessary tools to effect change in many students

  • DBT is school-friendly in that DBT skills can be taught in classrooms and group

Hawthorne Cedar Knolls, Hawthorne, NY

This training is engaging, informative, and useful for not only clinicians but teachers as well. I still think all faculty and staff should be exposed to this training to effectively address students' needs.

Pleasantville School District, Pleasantville, NY

The demeanor of the instructors was very engaging and positive, making attempts to validate and also connect to the participants throughout the training.

Dr. Thomas’ effectiveness comes from her ability to connect and share personal experiences that are relevant. Thank you so much for your candor and support. I'm really enjoying all that I am learning. I think this helps classroom teachers to help their students SO much.
