“My clinical and research focus has been the development and implementation of CBT treatment and prevention for adults and adolescents with anxiety, depression, OCD, and post-trauma stress reactions. CBC’s training pathways are designed to support warm, compassionate learning for students and professionals in practice, and in schools, agencies, and clinical and health settings, and business."

– Dr. Lata K. McGinn, Co-Founder and Co-Director, CBC

CBC co-founder, Dr. Lata McGinn and CBC colleagues have developed comprehensive CBT treatment, prevention, and training programs for children, adolescents and adults in clinical, corporate, school and college settings. These training programs have been rigorously developed and systematically delivered by experts over the past 30 years.

These training programs are offered as continuing education talks and workshops to individual professionals and students, to schools and colleges, businesses and corporations. Each training combines structured instruction with experiential practice and clinically precise therapy demonstrations, showing CBT applied with diverse clients and presentations. Ongoing consultation is also available with CBC consultants.

CBT Training for Public and Private Schools and Colleges

Schools and colleges are experiencing a mental health crisis among students who face greater challenges in meeting their expected, developmental milestones. Clinical settings such as agencies and hospitals are seeing unprecedented numbers of young people in higher levels of care.

CBC partners with schools and colleges to provide practical, evidence-informed CBT training and consultation for the adults and students and clients who make up a school community to manage this crisis and to help students reach expected, developmental milestones.

CBC offers flexible training formats in the umbrella of cognitive and behavioral therapies (CBT).

The flagship intensive professional and training and consultation programs include the Mind-Action Mood Universal CBT program, Foundations of CBT, Psychological First Aid Plus (PFA+), Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) and a series of specialized lectures and topics.

The flagship intensive professional and training and consultation programs include the Mind-Action Mood Universal CBT program, Foundations of CBT, Psychological First Aid Plus (PFA+), Skills for Psychological Recovery (SPR) and a series of specialized lectures and topics.

In addition, previous specialized trainings provided by master trainers at CBC include:

Our work has included parent education and skill programs, student education and skills workshops,

faculty professional development, and intensive continuing education professional training and consultation programs for school and college administrators, faculty, counseling and clinical staff to build and strengthen their CBT prevention and counseling services for adolescents and young adults.

Our work begins with an assessment to understand the institutions’ needs and goals, followed by a customized program to meet their needs. The training is tailored to each institution's goals and have ranged from 45–90 minute presentations and parent and student workshops to half-day and full-day professional development, to intensive training and consultation (two-day, three- and four-day workshops followed by ongoing consultation until goals are met).

A typical sequence may proceed as follows:

  • Needs Assessment to understand need and target audience
  • Orientation and commitment workshop with key stakeholders
    • (e.g., Deans, Provosts, faculty, superintendents, PPS directors, building principals, clinical staff, special education department, guidance/counseling staff)
  • Training Selection and Implementation:
    • Training sessions ranging from one hour-six hours
    • Half-day and full-day professional development
    • One-day to five-day workshop of CBT interventions and skills training and consultation;
      • Implementation workshop with providers ongoing weekly consultation for six months or bi-weekly consultation for one year.

Whether supporting teachers, counselors, social workers, psychologists, administrators, parents, or students across school (grades K–12) and colleges, our trainings are designed to give communities clear, usable strategies that translate directly into classrooms, counseling offices, advisory programs, and home-school/college partnerships.

Flagship intensive training and consultation programs include:

A CBT-Based Mental Fitness Program for Schools and Colleges

Students are facing increasing academic, social, emotional, and digital pressures, while schools and colleges are being asked to support rising levels of student distress, avoidance, anxiety, sadness, anger, and disengagement. The Mind-Action-Mood CBT Program (M&M-CBT; McGinn, 2019; McGinn, Shen, & Fried, 2024) was developed to meet this growing need by helping students build the coping capacity, emotional resilience, flexible thinking, and healthy action skills they need to manage stress, tolerate discomfort, reduce avoidance, and stay engaged in academic and social life.

M&M-CBT is a school- and college-based CBT program that trains core school and campus staff — including teachers, faculty, counselors, clinicians, student affairs professionals, and other student-support staff — to teach practical CBT skills across multiple levels of student need. The program gives schools and colleges a shared CBT-based language and a structured set of tools that can be used in classrooms, advisory programs, counseling offices, student support services, residence life, first-year experience programs, and other school or campus settings.

M&M-CBT is built on the idea that resilience grows through practice. Students receive structured opportunities to learn and use CBT skills when stress, discomfort, uncertainty, conflict, and strong emotions show up — helping them build mental fitness, effective coping, stronger relationships, and the ability to take constructive action over time.

M&M-CBT can be implemented as Tier 1 universal prevention, Tier 2 targeted student support, or Tier 3 focused CBT skill support, depending on the needs of the school or college community. Core staff receive a 3- to 4- day training workshop followed by ongoing consultation to support implementation.

M&M-CBT Can Be Implemented Across Tiers

Tier 1: Universal Prevention

As a Tier 1 prevention program, M&M-CBT is a 20-session CBT mental fitness program, with each session typically lasting 90 minutes. It is often introduced at key transition points, such as 9th grade in high school and the first year of college. Students receive the foundational M&M-CBT curriculum early in their high school or college experience, followed by annual booster sessions in subsequent years to reinforce skills, support continued coping, and help students keep applying CBT tools as academic, social, and emotional demands change.

Tier 2: Targeted Student Support

For students at risk for stress, anxiety, sadness, anger, avoidance, school refusal, academic disengagement, or social difficulty, M&M-CBT provides targeted CBT skills that help students recognize distress early, respond more effectively, and stay connected to school, campus life, relationships, and support.

Tier 3: Focused CBT Skill Support

For students already experiencing significant stress, anxiety, sadness, anger, avoidance, or school- or campus-related impairment, M&M-CBT can provide more focused CBT skill practice and support. It also helps school and college teams identify when additional clinical care or a higher level of support may be needed.

Grounded in CBT Expertise

Dr. McGinn has developed a curriculum for Foundations of CBT to target youth with anxiety and depressive disorders (Leahy, R.L., Holland, S. & McGinn, L.K., 2011; McGinn, L.K. & Sanderson, W. C., 1999; McGinn, L.K & Hofmann, 2016). CBT is an evidence-based intervention that can be used to treat students with a wide range of problems and conditions. This model trains school personnel to deliver CBT interventions and is considered primary, secondary and tertiary prevention with several goals in mind:

CBT is implemented in schools at tier 2, and 3 for children and adolescents who experience phobias, general anxiety, test and performance anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, acute and post-trauma stress. Behaviors displayed may include avoidance, tardiness, selective mutism, school refusal

Core staff receive a 3 day training workshop followed by weekly consultation for the duration of the program. However, introductory lectures and an overview of CBT foundations can also be provided (half day, 1-2 day workshops).

Why Schools and Colleges Choose CBC’s CITE Center Trainings

CBC’s CITE Center provides a continuum of CBT-based, skills-focused, and recovery-oriented training and consultation for schools and colleges, including the Mind, Action & Mood (M&M) Program, CBT Foundations, Psychological First Aid Plus (PFA+), Skills for Psychological Recovery, and targeted CBT topic lectures. These programs help school and campus communities build a shared language for student support, teach practical coping skills early, respond effectively to students who are struggling, and promote recovery after stress, crisis, loss, or trauma.

Our trainings are designed to give administrators, educators, faculty, counselors, student affairs teams, peer leaders, families, and student-facing staff concrete tools they can use across classrooms, counseling offices, advisory programs, residence life, academic support, student support meetings, crisis response efforts, and school-home or campus partnerships. For colleges and universities, these trainings also support student persistence, retention, campus connection, residence life response, faculty and staff preparedness, and coordinated care across counseling, student affairs, academic support, and campus life.

Build Skills Early

Programs such as Mind, Action & Mood CBT program help students develop coping skills, flexible thinking, emotional awareness and resilience, problem-solving, healthy action, and relationship skills before difficulties begin or become more entrenched.

Support Students Who Are Struggling Now

CBT-based foundations and Mind-Action-Mood CBT training equips schools and colleges to support students experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, avoidance, academic overwhelm, grief, emotion regulation difficulties, social stress, school refusal, or other mental health concerns.

Respond to Acute Stress, Crisis, and Recovery Needs

PFA+ and Skills for Psychological Recovery help schools and colleges respond to acute stress, critical incidents, loss, trauma, and the ongoing recovery needs that may follow. These trainings support stabilization, coping, connection, re-entry, postvention, and recovery planning.

Reduce Avoidance and Disengagement

CBT skills help students take practical next steps toward schoolwork, attendance, participation, relationships, and support. These tools can be especially useful for addressing procrastination, avoidance, tardiness, absenteeism, school refusal, social withdrawal, and patterns of excessive accommodation.

Create a Shared CBT Language

CBT Foundations gives school and college teams a common framework for understanding the connection between thoughts, feelings, behaviors, stress reactions, coping, and change. This shared language helps adults respond more consistently and helps students practice skills across settings.Strengthen School- and Campus-Based Care

CBC’s trainings help schools and colleges support students within the institution whenever appropriate, while also strengthening teams’ ability to identify when additional outside support or a higher level of care may be needed.

Support Staff and Administrators

When school and college communities share a skills-based framework, staff feel less helpless and more equipped. CBT-based tools give educators, clinicians, student affairs teams, and administrators concrete strategies for understanding student distress, responding consistently, and helping students move toward coping, engagement, and recovery.
