SAGE Progressions Executive Functioning helps young adults acquire practical strategies to manage the demands of this life transition with greater independence.
SAGE Progressions EF is a skills group for young adults (ages 18-30) who are experiencing challenges with executive functioning. They may have difficulty with effective goal-setting, planning, prioritizing, task initiation, task completion, and follow through, and may be struggling to meet the new demands of emerging adulthood. Participants may have diagnoses of an anxiety or mood disorder, and may or may not have a diagnosis of ADHD or other neurodevelopmental disorder.
In group, patients learn skills to manage their time, overcome procrastination, establish organizational systems for tasks, improve their attention, and study effectively. Group also covers special topics relevant to executive functioning in emerging adulthood, such as the basics of financial planning. Participants will directly practice these skills via “skill drills” in each session, and will practice skills learned each week for homework. Group meets Thursdays from 10:00am-12:00pm for 10 weeks.
While participating in group, patients will also meet at least once per week with an individual therapist to enhance learning and apply skills more directly to their individual challenges.
Ongoing Treatment
The minimum commitment for this group is one cycle of ten weeks. Following completion of ten weeks, members may elect to participate in additional cycles for ongoing support. Members may also continue meeting with their individual therapist following completion of group.
This group is part of the larger SAGE Progressions program, which also includes a DBT graduate skills group for emotion regulation on Tuesdays and a CBT skills group for overcoming avoidance on Wednesdays. Executive functioning challenges often co-occur with emotion regulation difficulties. SAGE Progressions EF members may therefore benefit from participation in the other SAGE Progressions groups. If greater emotional and behavioral stabilization is needed first, young adults may consider participating in the SAGE Foundations intensive DBT program prior to the executive functioning group.
When does the group meet?
Thursdays from 10:00am-12:00pm.
Where does the group meet?
While the SAGE Progressions EF group meets physically in our White Plains office, all SAGE groups are equipped for hybrid in-person and virtual participation. Clients may participate in groups fully remotely if clinically appropriate, or may participate some days in-person and some days via telehealth. Individual SAGE therapists are located in the White Plains and New York City offices for weekly individual appointments. The White Plains offices is accessible via Metro North for clients living in NYC and the greater Westchester area.
When can new members join?
New members can join each Thursday.
Do you need to be in individual therapy while in this group?
Yes. Patients are required to be in individual therapy at CBC or elsewhere.
How long is the commitment?
The SAGE Progressions EF group meets once per week for ten weeks.
What is the process for joining?
Call CBC’s intake line at 914 385 1150 x1 or 212 595 9559 x 1 to schedule a 90-minute intake. The intake consists of 60 minutes of assessment with the young adult patient, and 30 minutes of orientation to the program for young adults and their parents. If joining this group following completion of SAGE Foundations or if you are already receiving individual therapy within CBC, you are required to attend a 45-minute orientation and assessment session before joining the group.
What can I hope to achieve after I finish this program?
After ten weeks in SAGE Progressions EF, most patients will have an understanding of the different domains of executive functioning and where their strengths and weaknesses are. They will have knowledge of and practice with strategies to improve time management, task initiation and completion, planning, memory, organization, and focus. Young adults will need to continue to practice and implement these skills following completion of the program.
What are the options for aftercare?
After completion of SAGE Progressions EF, patients have the option of enrolling in the group for another cycle of ten weeks if they would benefit from additional review and practice with skills learned. They may continue in individual sessions with their therapist for continued support and skill strengthening. Other targets, such as emotion regulation, anxiety, or mood, that can transact with executive functioning deficits, can be addressed individual sessions or in other SAGE programs.
