Pre-Doctoral Externship in Evidence-Based Treatments
at Cognitive Behavioral Consultants

Cognitive Behavioral Consultants (CBC) invites applications for a pre-doctoral externship beginning July 1, 2019.  CBC is an evidence-based clinical and training center founded in 2004 by Drs. Lata McGinn and Alec Miller, both of whom are internationally recognized experts in their respective fields of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). CBC is comprised of a select group of highly skilled clinicians, educators, and researchers who specialize in CBT and DBT. We offer a collegial and intellectually stimulating environment and an outstanding opportunity to receive training and supervision in comprehensive CBT and DBT for a broad range of disorders with children, adolescents, and adults, and experience working with individual clients, groups, couples, and families. We also offer specialized training with certified trainers in many evidence-based treatments including but not limited to Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), intensive OCD treatment, social anxiety group treatment, executive functioning coaching, intensive DBT program (Steps) to meet the needs of young adults who require a higher level of care, and more.

Externs conduct individual, couples, family, and group therapy, and co-lead one or more CBT groups and/or DBT skills training groups with highly trained therapists/supervisors. This comprehensive training experience includes a 5-day CBT foundational and a 5-day DBT foundational training at our Schwartzberg Training Center, several hours of individual and group supervision per week, weekly DBT consultation team, monthly CBT consultation team, didactic seminars on CBT and DBT, disorder-specific case conferences, and a lecture series in which nationally and internationally renowned speakers are invited.

Externs have the option of participating in the following services:

  •      Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
  •      Trauma Treatment Program
  •      Neuropsychological Testing and Executive Functioning
  •      DBT Step up Program for young adults
  •      OCD intensive program
  •      Social Anxiety Group program

 

Requirements:

  • Fourth year doctoral candidates in a clinical or school-clinical psychology.
  • Previous clinical experience providing CBT.
  • Interest in Providing DBT.
  • 20 hours/week across 3 days.
  • Friday being a mandatory training day. Other days are flexible.

CBC offers a warm and supportive atmosphere in which externs receive comprehensive training and supervision from highly trained supervisors. Based on their interests and/or prior experiences, externs will have the opportunity to conduct individual, family, and couples therapy, as well as parent training using CBT and DBT modalities. In addition, externs who have previous experience with CBT and DBT, may have the opportunity to complete a neuropsychological testing rotation (including Executive Functioning Coaching). Externs have the opportunity to co-lead DBT and CBT groups with highly trained therapists/supervisors. Externs will receive individual, peer, and group CBT supervision, dyadic DBT supervision, as well as attend weekly didactic seminars on topics related to CBT and DBT.

This externship provides a unique opportunity to join a cohesive team of clinicians dedicated to clinical training and provide cutting edge evidence-based therapy.

Requirements:

Advanced third year or fourth year doctoral candidates in a clinical or school-clinical psychology program are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have previous clinical experience providing CBT and conducting assessment.

Applicants should have prior experience conducting CBT with children, adolescents, adults and families.

Applicants who wish to conduct DBT will need to have completed the DBT Intensive Training offered by The Linehan Institute – Behavioral Tech (BTech).

This is a yearly program that begins early July.
