The Parents Of Young Adults Group

Cognitive Behavioral Consultants is excited to announce an upcoming opportunity to join a group in our White Plains Office designed to help and support the parents of young adults who need help regulating their emotions. This group was formed in recognition for the unique developmental demands of this life stage and the realization that parents, like their young adults, need validation and support.

Participants: Parents of young adults who need help regulating emotions (ages 18 – 25 who are not in high school)

Group Description: Many parents struggle with balancing their role as their adolescent transitions to adulthood. This is made only more complicated in young adults who are vulnerable to experiencing intense emotions and may have difficulty regulating their emotions. Parents often report they experience intense feelings of confusion, guilt, or anger over their young adult’s behavior. This group was developed based on years of providing DBT-Informed Parenting Skills to individual families. It was designed to support parents and provide a new behavioral repertoire of skills to reduce their own emotional vulnerability while supporting their young adult, all while balancing the dialectic of being both gentle and firm. The goals of the group are to:

  • Educate family members on understanding emotion regulation and how to achieve it
  • Learn how to understand behaviors exhibited by your child and what they may be achieving for them
  • Learn how to promote effective communication and improved emotional functioning
  • Learn intra-family communication strategies and vocabulary to maintain an environment that is based on mutual respect and understanding
  • Provide a forum to gain appropriate guidance and support from other families
  • Learn how to identify and effectively increase skillful behavior and decrease problematic behaviors
  • Utilize emotion regulation strategies when faced with angry or hurtful remarks to improve coping behaviors

Group Structure: The 15-week group will cover such topics as mindful parenting, increasing effective communication skills, coping with emotionally intense moments, increasing effective responses and decreasing problematic behaviors, among other topics. Each group will include a review of skills use during the week, time to connect with other parents, presentation of new material, and consultation to families on a rotating basis.
