Voices Rising is an intensive group behavioral treatment program designed to help children aged 3-12 with selective mutism (SM) speak in school, with peers and in other public places. Using a small setting, like a classroom, children can practice “brave talking.” This includes asking specific kinds of questions, waiting for an answer and using lots of praise and reinforcement when the child speaks. During the program, there are frequent opportunities to speak and engage in activities, and we tailor goals specifically to each child. Presenting to the group, peer-to-peer interactions, initiating speech and community exposures are all part of the program.
Our clinicians are trained in adapted Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for SM, which is also the treatment we use to help with brave talking. Parent training is an integral part of Voices Rising. We offer both single day and multiday options during the year as well as programming for older children (8-12).
